Biographical/Historical Note

Clarence Pendleton Lee was born on May 26, 1913, in Varner, Arkansas. He received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Washington and Lee University, and attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He was a member of the English faculty of Southwestern University at Memphis from 1936 to 1940, an instructor at Harvard from 1940 to 1944, and a professor at the University of Tennessee from 1946 to 1955. Lee served as an assistant cultural relations attache in Brussels from 1945 to 1946, and as Fulbright professor at the University of Athens from 1955 to 1956. He regularly wrote articles for the Arkansas Gazette magazine and for various newspapers.
